2024 Vlieland

On our way to Vlieland again! To me one of the best places to be....

A remote beach, dunes, wind and the sound of the sea...

(Vlieland is a municipality of the Dutch province Friesland
In the Frisian language, not only a dialect but a language on it's own,
the word 'Heit' is father and the word 'Mem' is mother)

Space and time to relax and enjoy the company of some good friends.

One morning we spotted this little small newt on the beach, close to the surf.

Although the species Kleine watersalamander is protected, we took it to the cabin

where we spotted a similar newt at the terrace the day before...

From the back of the cabin you're overlooking protected nature reserve.

It looks like a much more suitable habitat for the newt. We released it there.

It's not all about observing nature...

One has to eat and you can't eat pasta or pizza everyday of the week.

here's something else, a plate looking and tasting delicious...

In the early morning I visit the beach, often just by myself.

Each morning the same route, into wide open space... but always very different.

The weather, the light, the sounds, the texture of the beach, the finds...

I couldn't just believe my eyes.... a big vertebrae... waiting for me (big smile)

Some of my beach finds.

According to the ObsIdentify app the 14 cm vertebrae is from an Elk (Moose).

and the black bone, the first fossil find on Vlieland for me, in 21 year,

from a European otter. I think it's a shoulder blade...

Beach combing is my kind of thing!

Or, for a change, a bike ride with good friends in gloomy weather.

On the southside of the island is the terminal. The Wadden Sea, mostly very quiet.

All good things come to an end and so it's time to leave the island again...

Recovery Time

We love to comb the beach for treasures: fossils, shells, ray or shark eggs.

Three weeks ago the weather forecast predicted 100% rain

but it turned out to be ideal circumstances for beach combing.

Strong but not too strong wind and (almost) no rain.

Due to strong winds the previous days a lot of junk washed up on the shore.

Rope, nets, shoes, wood and an awful lot of plastic.

 Suddenly something caught my eye....

At first sight it looked like a piece of rubber, care tyre or a piece of wood...

but it appeared to be an upper jaw and part of a skull of some kind.....

So exciting! Fossil find? Doggerland? A great find, we were chuffed!
A couple of days later an expert said it's recent and from a cow.
We still have our doubts so we'll go for a second opinion ☺︎

The next morning...

a beautiful sunrise... and the beach almost to myself...

In the afternoon lots of activity at 'La baie de la slack' near Ambleteuse.

Wissant

It has been 3 weeks already, we visited Wissant

Stormy and rainy on Saturday...

Sunny on Sunday ☀︎

In the morning we visited the beach in Wissant

Followed by a very nice afternoon at Cap Blanc-Nez (Blankenesse, Witte Nes)

Near the cliffs it can be dangerous.
There's always the lurking danger of a collapsing cliff wall.
And breeding on a steep chalky water leaking wall isn't without risks either...
