Jakob Smits Museum

Recently I've visited the Dirk Baksteen exhibition at Jakob Smits Museum.
Twice. For years I've been a great admirer of his art.

Perhaps you have seen my earlier posts about the museum and the artist.
(You can find it herehere and here)

First I would like to show you some art by other artists in Jakob Smits Museum:

A charcoal / black crayon drawing "Moeder en geit" (Mother and goat) by Jakob Smits

Etching and aquatint "Schaapsherder" (Shepherd) by Leopold Haeck

Impression of the museum:

Another favourite art work : oil paint on wooden panel
"Geboortehuis van de moeder van Frans Van Leemputten" 1865
by Corneel Van Leemputten (Dutch link: here)

Temporary Dirk Baksteen Exhibition: Stilist van de Stilte

I'm sorry for the light reflections in the glass...

Baksteen's eye for detail and craftsmanship is incredible...

The exhibition led to some debate in the community of Mol,
the municipality where Dirk Baksteen used to live and work.
To this very day Dirk Baksteen's collaboration with the Germans during World War II is still delicate.
His belief and actions influenced, perhaps even up until now, many lives.

After the war Baksteen was convicted for 5 years and imprisoned for 3 years.
He never returned to (live in) Mol again.

The question could be:
Can you exhibit the work of an artist with questionable ideas / behaviour?

Maybe we should aim to separate the art from someone's belief and actions.

It can be quite difficult but I just hope we can!

Exhibition Dirk Baksteen

Last Wednesday I went to Jacob Smits Museum.

I have been waiting a long time for one of my favourite artists : Dirk Baksteen.

Being over the moon I forgot to take some photo's of his work ☺

But I will visit the exhibition again so to be continued....

You can see my earlier Dirk Baksteen posts here and here.

Dirk Baksteen

Just a while ago I mentioned Dirk Baksteen.
You can see my earlier post here.

Since we both love his work, we got hold of a couple of his etchings.
We removed the old damaged and sometimes moldy frames
and now we have to get them some new frames.

Museum Visit

Yesterday we visited the Jakob Smits Museum.
A fortnight ago I bought two prints from Dirk Baksteen at the charity shop.
I did some research on the internet and that's when I got hooked :)

Jacob Smits was his teacher, friend and almost a second father to him.
According to the website the museum should have some work from Dirk Baksteen as well.
At first we saw a lot of work from Jakob Smits...

Christus en de overspelige vrouw 1923 - Jacob Smits

Landschap 1924 - Jacob Smits

My favourite work: Moeder met het geitje - Jacob Smits

And some other works from the Molse School...

Witzandwinning "La Molloise" - Gaston De Biemme

Het gesprek (windmolen) 1928 - Dirk Baksteen

Sadly enough there was only one work of Dirk Baksteen we could find in the museum.

Chapeau for the lady in the museum! She made our day.
After I told her we were kind of hoping to see more work of Dirk Baksteen,
she told us after repainting the walls almost all of his work was in depot now.
But she was willing to go and get a box and show us some of his works. Yes!

While sitting on our knees, we saw some beautiful etchings.
